In his own barn, Seamus the miniature donkey enjoys his snack time, filling his belly. Despite his young age, he follows a routine, often joining his canine companion, Isla, for a visit to the house. Dana Blackmore, Seamus’ owner, aims to familiarize him with indoor settings, ensuring he is comfortable around people, children, and other animals.
Residing in Pound Cove, N.L., Seamus is the latest addition to Blackmore and Patrick Kean’s animal family, which includes horses, a mule, dogs, and cats. The couple plans to establish a therapy program using the animals to assist individuals dealing with physical, mental, and emotional challenges, leveraging the socialization benefits animals like dogs, birds, and horses can bring.
Seamus was acquired from northern New Brunswick and is currently undergoing a 30-day quarantine before joining the other animals. Blackmore highlights Seamus’ amusing daily routine, which includes visits to the house for carrots from the fridge and cozy naps on the living room rug.
Through her social media channels, Blackmore shares Seamus’ endearing personality and interactions with humans, emphasizing the joy and relaxation he brings into her life. As they continue Seamus’ training, the couple plans to construct a large barn on their newly acquired farm to house all their animals and potentially open a therapy animal program to the public.
Blackmore acknowledges the commitment required to care for a donkey but believes in Seamus’ potential to bring happiness and comfort to others, especially during challenging times.
