In Minneapolis, a recent fatal immigration officer-involved shooting has drawn attention to the city’s unique atmosphere, according to U.S. Vice-President JD Vance. While visiting the area, Vance expressed surprise at the lack of chaos compared to other cities where immigration enforcement actions have occurred. He suggested that Minneapolis authorities should collaborate more with federal immigration enforcement agencies.

The history of protest in Minnesota, dating back to the 1890s, may shed light on the current situation. Notably, the Teamsters strike of 1934, known as Bloody Friday, resulted in the deaths of two protesters and influenced the passing of the National Labor Relations Act. Retired labor history professor Peter Rachleff sees parallels between past events and the current unrest in the twin cities.

Minnesota has a rich pro-labor heritage, evidenced by the recent anti-ICE march in freezing conditions, where 20,000 individuals chanted in support of unions. The state’s history includes successful labor actions like the Great Northern Railroad Strike of 1894 and the Teamsters strike of 1934, which led to significant changes in labor laws.

The civil rights movement also has deep roots in Minnesota, with integrated community organizing dating back to the 1960s. Today, volunteers from various organizations work together to support immigrants and shield them from ICE activities. The legacy of past movements, such as the Black Power Movement and the Chicano Movement, continues to influence current protest strategies.

The death of George Floyd in 2020 further fueled activism in Minneapolis, sparking a renewed focus on grassroots organizing and network building. The diverse nature of the current movement allows people of all backgrounds to participate in various ways, from peaceful protests to community protection initiatives.

Minnesota’s history of protest serves as a foundation for the ongoing social movements in the state, showcasing a strong tradition of activism and community engagement.
