The Cree Nation of Mistissini, approximately 600 kilometers northwest of Quebec City, has ended a lockdown following the fatal shooting of two individuals. The Quebec coroner’s office identified the deceased as Bedabin Neeposh, aged 30, and Daniel Benac, aged 29, both members of the Mistissini community. Chief Michael Petawabano acknowledged ongoing investigations into the incident, with law enforcement confirming no ongoing threat to public safety.
Expressing gratitude for community members’ patience and cooperation during the challenging period, Chief Petawabano emphasized the resilience shown by the residents. Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Hugues Beaulieu suggested a potential connection to organized crime in the homicides but assured the public that there is no active threat to the community.
Earlier, Chief Petawabano had issued directives to close all schools, community buildings, and restrict travel in and out of the area while urging residents to follow law enforcement guidance. The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, with the Eeyou Eenou Police Force responding to reports of gunfire, discovering the victims in a vehicle with fatal gunshot wounds.
Petawabano conveyed his condolences through social media, expressing sorrow for the lives lost and the families impacted. Quebec Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière and Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse also extended support and condolences to the Mistissini community, emphasizing unity during the tragic event.
Situated on the shores of Lake Mistassini, Mistissini has a population of approximately 4,000 residents.
