Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee has resigned from the B.C. Conservative caucus, urging the party’s leader to step down. During a press briefing at the legislature on Monday morning, Boultbee criticized John Rustad’s leadership, stating that his tenure must come to an end. She highlighted her decision to leave the caucus, citing Rustad’s recent actions and comments as factors in her departure.

Accusing Rustad of hindering the party’s chances in the upcoming election, Boultbee called for his resignation, emphasizing the negative impact of his leadership on the Conservative Party of B.C. Rustad, in response, accused Boultbee of leaking confidential information to the media, leading to internal disruptions within the caucus.

Last week, Rustad admitted to conducting a search of MLAs’ phones in a bid to identify the source of leaked information from a caucus meeting. Boultbee vehemently denied these accusations, labeling them as baseless and threatening legal action against Rustad for persisting with the claims. Rustad also raised concerns about Boultbee’s positions on various issues and questioned her mental well-being, which Boultbee condemned as an attempt to exploit personal information against her.

The turmoil within the Conservative Party has resulted in the departure of several MLAs, including Boultbee and others forming new affiliations. Boultbee, considered a centrist in her political views, expressed disappointment in Rustad’s leadership, which she believes has alienated members across the political spectrum. Despite speculation about potential collaborations with other former party members, Boultbee and Sturko stated it was premature to decide on forming a new political entity, opting to focus on shared priorities instead.

The internal strife within the B.C. Conservatives has raised concerns about the party’s effectiveness as the Official Opposition, with the focus shifting away from holding the ruling NDP government accountable. Rustad, however, remains steadfast in his commitment to challenging the NDP and maintaining party unity in pursuit of their political objectives.
