A Montreal physician found guilty of sexual assault and accused of assaulting seven additional women reportedly took steps to protect his assets from his victims before committing suicide, according to two legal complaints. The lawsuits, filed in Montreal recently, claim that Stephan Probst, the former head of nuclear medicine at the Jewish General Hospital, sexually assaulted two women identified as A and G in each case.

Both A and G are pursuing damages exceeding $300,000 from Probst’s estate. They allege that Probst transferred two properties to his partner, Wendy Devera, before his suicide in an apparent effort to shield his assets from potential lawsuits by his accusers.

Probst and Devera were convicted in August 2024 of sexually assaulting an unnamed woman referred to as X in court records. Six months later, Probst faced new charges of sexually assaulting seven more women between 2003 and 2020. A and G claim in their lawsuits that they were among the additional victims and decided to report the incidents to the authorities after realizing the similarities between their experiences and that of X, which they learned about through the media.

Devera received a sentence of two years minus a day for her involvement in the assault on X, with half of the term to be served under house arrest and the rest under community supervision with conditions. Quebec court Judge Suzanne Costom expressed her belief that Devera would not have committed the assault had she not been in a relationship with Probst.

Before being sentenced for the 2020 assault on X and facing the new charges, Probst took his own life in June 2025. Prior to his death, property records indicate that he transferred two properties to Devera for no monetary compensation. Devera subsequently sold one of the properties, a condo in Plateau Mont-Royal, for $470,000. She retained ownership of the other property, a downtown luxury condo purchased by Probst for over $1.2 million in 2017.

A and G argue in their lawsuits that the property transfers were a deliberate move by Probst to prevent his alleged victims from obtaining compensation from his estate. A’s lawsuit suggests that Probst’s actions were intended to render himself insolvent and defraud his creditors.

Furthermore, business records reveal that Probst appointed Devera as a director of his company, Stephan Probst Medical Services, shortly before his death in May 2025.

In one of the lawsuits, A recounts the progression of her interactions with the couple, stating that she initially met Devera on an online dating platform in 2018. After expressing interest in a sexual relationship with Devera, A alleges that Probst intervened during their encounters, despite her objections. A asserts that the assaults led her to cut ties with the couple in 2020 after witnessing concerning behavior at a party hosted by Probst.

G, the second plaintiff suing Probst’s estate, claims to have had a relationship with Probst beginning in 2012, during which she asserts that he drugged her against her will and sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions. Notably, G’s lawsuit does not implicate Devera in any sexual misconduct.

Both A and G state that the alleged assaults have caused them severe emotional distress, including suicidal ideation and depression, necessitating frequent emergency interventions. The claims made in the lawsuits have yet to be adjudicated in court. CBC News has attempted to contact Devera’s legal representation for comment without success.
