The incident occurred following reports by Politico on Tuesday about d’Entremont considering aligning with the Liberal government. According to d’Entremont, Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer and party whip Chris Warkentin barged into his office, creating a hostile environment that solidified his decision to defect. In an interview on CBC’s “Rosemary Barton Live,” d’Entremont highlighted the negative atmosphere and personal attacks within the Conservative leadership that led him to view the party as more akin to a fraternity than a serious political entity.
The Conservative Party has denied d’Entremont’s accusations, dismissing him as untruthful and emphasizing his dissatisfaction over a desired deputy speaker role as a motivation for his actions. While acknowledging the visit by Scheer and Warkentin to his office, the Official Opposition’s Office stated that their approach was calm and respectful, contrary to d’Entremont’s portrayal. The official account described Scheer’s composed demeanor during the meeting, stressing that d’Entremont’s decision to switch sides was seen as disloyal and backstabbing by his former colleagues.
D’Entremont clarified that his contemplation of crossing the floor had been ongoing since the election and was not prompted by promises of a cabinet position or other incentives from the Liberals. He cited discontent among his supporters due to the Conservative Party’s leadership style, which led him to distance himself from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre during the campaign. A meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney further solidified his resolve, although he did not intend for the news to break through a casual comment made to Politico on the budget release day.
The defection of d’Entremont has raised concerns about disarray within the Conservative caucus, especially following the announcement of another MP, Matt Jeneroux, planning to resign from politics. Speculation arose regarding potential floor crossings by other Conservative members, with d’Entremont suggesting that at least three or four were contemplating similar moves. Despite hopes for Poilievre to address concerns over his leadership style, d’Entremont expressed disappointment in the lack of change, indicating a potential shift in dynamics within the Conservative Party.
