Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Jamil Jivani has expressed his willingness to assist Prime Minister Mark Carney in resuming trade discussions with the United States. Jivani, representing Bowmanville-Oshawa North, has a longstanding friendship with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance from their time at Yale Law School, although their recent interactions have mainly revolved around fantasy football.

With the impending departure of Kirsten Hillman and the appointment of a new ambassador, Jivani believes it could be a pivotal moment for the Canadian government to review its U.S. trade strategy. He has offered his support to enhance the trade situation, emphasizing that he is prepared to engage if requested by Carney.

Reflecting on past instances where lack of coordination led to issues, such as the fallout from the “Doug Ford commercial debacle,” where trade talks were disrupted after an Ontario advertisement featuring Ronald Reagan aired, Jivani underscored the importance of a cohesive strategy.

Despite extending support in the past, Jivani aims to avoid intervening without invitation. He has been vocal within Conservative circles, advocating against what he terms “Liberal racism” and policies like Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) that he believes hinder opportunities for non-racialized Canadians.

In a recent interview with CBC News, Jivani discussed his diverse advocacy campaigns, from challenging DEI policies to shedding light on issues impacting young men through a national university tour. While his stances may appear disparate, Jivani asserts his commitment to addressing culturally significant matters that he perceives as needing reassessment.

Regarding his critique of DEI policies, Jivani emphasizes the importance of fostering healthy dialogue and drawing clear boundaries to prevent hate speech or racism. He stands firm against any form of discrimination, urging for respectful and constructive conversations.

Looking ahead to the Conservative convention in January, where Leader Pierre Poilievre faces a mandatory leadership review post the electoral defeat, Jivani is optimistic about the outcome. He believes that Poilievre will garner strong support, citing his previous victory as party leader and anticipating a similar result in the upcoming review.

Jivani’s optimism extends to the potential for collaboration between Conservative and Liberal MPs to drive positive change without compromising their respective party affiliations. He commends Poilievre’s resilience following electoral setbacks, noting his growth as a leader through challenging experiences like contesting in a different riding post-defeat.
