NDP Member of Parliament Charlie Angus is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to cancel Elon Musk’s dual-citizenship and Canadian passport. In a move to exert pressure, Angus is championing an online petition that demands the government take immediate action.
The electronic petition, accessible on the parliamentary website, alleges that Musk has utilized his wealth and influence within the Trump administration to interfere in Canadian elections, actions deemed contrary to Canada’s national interests. The petition specifically accuses Musk of aligning himself with a foreign government seeking to undermine Canadian sovereignty.
Recently, Musk expressed his opinions on Canadian politics via his social media platform X, notably endorsing Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre while deriding Trudeau as an “insufferable tool.” The petition, initiated by Nanaimo-based author Qualia Reed, is set to be presented to the House of Commons at the commencement of a new parliamentary session.
Signatures for the petition began accumulating on Thursday and have surged rapidly, surpassing 76,000 by Sunday morning. Although parliamentary e-petitions serve to highlight public concerns, they do not legally bind the government to alter its policies, according to the House of Commons website.
Musk, a key consultant to U.S. President Donald Trump, holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, a native of Regina. Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on Canadian goods and his musings about Canada joining the U.S. have stirred discontent among many Canadians. Musk has likened Trudeau to a “governor,” echoing language used by Trump.
The House of Commons is scheduled to convene on March 24, but with expectations of an imminent general election call. The petition aims to amass signatures until June 20, emphasizing the urgency of the matter at hand.
