A local politician faced threats over a new speed bump in the neighborhood, while another was confronted due to delayed garbage collection. In a recent incident, a man who had been communicating with London city hall was arrested after his messages escalated into death threats. Petra Wolfbleiss, from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), noted the increasing challenges faced by municipal leaders, including growing discord within council members and the public.

In 2024, the mayor of Russell, Ontario, resigned citing a toxic online environment and lack of civility. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and his family received threats this year, necessitating police protection. Wolfbleiss highlighted that public figures often become targets of uncivil behavior due to unrelated issues. The AMO is assisting municipalities in handling incivility and enhancing protection for officials and staff.

London city councillor Corrine Rahman emphasized the rise in personal attacks and threats aimed at politicians and their families. She expressed concerns about the normalization of disrespect in society, acknowledging the toll such behavior takes. Rahman stressed the importance of creating a safe environment for respectful dialogue.

Councillor Shawn Lewis of London implemented strict guidelines on social media to combat disrespectful language, advocating for standing up to bullies rather than ignoring them. He highlighted that women and minorities are often singled out for attacks. Lewis emphasized the need to address negativity and unfounded criticisms professionally and not tolerate personal attacks.

Experts noted a rise in hostility and lack of empathy in online interactions, particularly targeting marginalized groups. Lewis emphasized the need to distinguish personal attacks from professional discourse. The municipal election in Ontario is set for October 26, 2026.
