Rare Orca Whales Spotted in Vancouver Harbour Puzzle Experts
Recently, three unique killer whales have been sighted in Vancouver Harbour, sparking curiosity among marine experts. The whales, believed to be from an Alaska population, have surprised researchers as they have never been seen before in British Columbia waters. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is conducting a detailed study to unravel the mystery surrounding these unfamiliar visitors.
A team of scientists from Nanaimo, B.C., dispatched by DFO, has been closely observing the whales, gathering valuable information for further analysis. Jared Towers, executive director of Bay Cetology, highlighted the exceptional nature of these sightings, explaining that the orcas do not belong to the typical Bigg’s killer whale population found in the region. Towers emphasized the importance of identifying individual whales through distinct physical features to track their movements over time.
Experts speculate that the whales may originate from oceanic habitats due to distinct markings on their bodies, possibly caused by encounters with cookiecutter sharks found in open waters. Josh McInnes, a researcher at the University of British Columbia, noted that while sightings of oceanic killer whales near coastal areas are rare, these recent appearances in Vancouver Harbour have raised questions about the whales’ origins and behavior.
Concerns have been raised about the prolonged presence of the whales in the busy harbor, with some experts suggesting that the unfamiliar environment may be causing psychological distress for the animals. Aly Kohlman, a marine naturalist, expressed the need for further observation to determine the whales’ population and ensure their well-being.
As researchers continue to monitor the situation, the public is encouraged to share any whale sightings with Finwave.io to aid in identification efforts. However, it is crucial for vessels to maintain a safe distance of at least 400 meters from killer whales in compliance with Canada’s Marine Mammal Regulations.
