B.C. NDP Member of Parliament Gord Johns expressed strong confidence that none of the seven New Democrats in the House of Commons will defect to the Liberal party, despite ongoing efforts by the Liberals to recruit them. In an interview with CBC’s Rosemary Barton Live, Johns confirmed that he has consistently declined the Liberals’ recruitment attempts over the years.

The recent floor-crossings by Conservative MPs have sparked speculation about potential defections to the Liberals, who are now just two seats away from a majority. Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont and Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux made headlines with their decisions, adding to the intrigue on Parliament Hill.

While the Liberals have signaled openness to welcoming MPs who support their budget, NDP MP Johns emphasized that the values and principles of the New Democrats remain steadfast. He noted that while d’Entremont may have found alignment with the Liberal Party under Prime Minister Mark Carney, the NDP MPs are committed to their social democratic ideals.

Conservative sources revealed that efforts have been made to prevent further defections, with former campaign manager Jenni Byrne reportedly involved in these efforts. Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer denied applying pressure on MPs to stay within the caucus, attributing Jeneroux’s resignation to Liberal tactics rather than internal party dynamics.

Scheer dismissed the notion of additional defections and criticized d’Entremont for personal grievances rather than ideological differences. He highlighted the importance of maintaining party unity amidst external pressures and media speculation.

The evolving dynamics in Parliament reflect a delicate balance of party loyalty, personal convictions, and strategic maneuvering as the political landscape continues to shift.
