Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi has delivered a direct message to contenders vying for federal NDP leadership. Nenshi revealed his discussions with the top three candidates – Avi Lewis, Heather McPherson, and Rob Ashton – hinting that he urged them not to hinder his efforts to secure victory in the upcoming Alberta election.

Nenshi’s aim is to overthrow the Alberta Premier Danielle Smith-led United Conservative Party government, which he described as “malicious, incompetent, and corrupt.” He emphasized the urgency for Alberta to avoid internal ideological conflicts within the party.

Highlighting the distinct challenges faced by the Alberta NDP compared to the federal NDP, Nenshi emphasized the need for unity to effectively tackle the current government. He emphasized the importance of showcasing a pragmatic and progressive party to Alberta voters.

Acknowledging the success of provincial NDP branches across Nova Scotia, Ontario, and British Columbia, Nenshi pointed out the federal NDP’s recent setback in losing official party status. The ongoing federal NDP leadership race will determine if the next leader will enhance or hinder the party’s prospects of forming more provincial NDP governments.

In a notable remark during the federal leadership race, candidate Rob Ashton commended provincial NDP leaders while criticizing his opponent Avi Lewis. Lewis, who has emerged as a fundraising leader, holds a policy stance conflicting with some provincial NDP leaders on fossil fuel production.

Responding to criticisms of fracturing the NDP movement, Lewis affirmed his support for provincial counterparts and stressed the shared values of wealth distribution among New Democrats. He emphasized the importance of fostering healthy debate within the party.

Nenshi clarified his neutrality in the federal leadership race, refraining from endorsing any candidate or engaging in campaign activities. While his district overlaps with candidate Heather McPherson’s riding, Nenshi disclosed that he will not participate in the voting process.

The Alberta NDP leader highlighted the substantial influence Alberta’s membership could wield in the leadership race, underscoring the pivotal role the province plays in the national political landscape.
