The current budget released by the Susan Holt government outlines a plan to increase the province’s debt by six billion dollars over the next three years. Despite initial warnings of tough decisions, the government aims to spread out these choices over an extended period rather than implementing immediate cuts.

Initially promising to balance the budget over four years, Holt’s government now anticipates deficits for the remainder of its term. This trajectory is expected to raise the net debt from $13.9 billion to $19.7 billion, resulting in an approximately eight percent increase in the net debt to GDP ratio by the end of the 2029 fiscal year.

Economist Richard Saillant expresses concerns about the budget’s impact on the province’s credit rating, labeling it fiscally irresponsible and unsustainable. Meanwhile, Finance Minister René Legacy defends the approach, stating that the government is engaging with various groups to discuss cost-cutting measures.

Opposition voices, like Progressive Conservative finance critic Don Monahan, criticize the budget for not reflecting the anticipated difficult decisions and cuts. Green Party Leader David Coon also raises concerns about the projected trajectory of the deficit and debt to GDP ratio.

Despite a call for departments to reduce expenses by 10 percent, only three departments have seen cuts, with overall government spending projected to increase by 5.5 percent. The health care sector receives significant investment, with a 17.4 percent increase in the budget, although overspending from the previous year is noted.

The government plans various cost-saving measures, including reducing the civil service through attrition, introducing tolls on non-New Brunswick vehicles, and phasing out certain services and assets. Additionally, there are proposals to generate revenue by addressing contraband tobacco and illegal lobster sales.

Overall, the budget outlines a mix of spending increases, budget cuts, and revenue-generating initiatives aimed at managing the province’s finances in the coming years.
