Police apprehended a woman following the tragic demise of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter in Longueuil, Quebec. The infant was found at a bus shelter near Briggs Street on Chambly Road. Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre stated that a 33-year-old woman was arrested on Monday morning. Authorities are currently assessing the woman’s mental and physical well-being. While the police did not confirm the woman’s relation to the baby, they are considering the possibility of charging her with infanticide.

Upon discovery, the baby was found unclothed, attached to the placenta, and in a state of severe coldness, as reported by the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie, the paramedic service for the region. The infant was unconscious when located, prompting immediate resuscitation efforts before being transported to the hospital.

The Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) disclosed that a witness called 911 around 6:30 a.m. on Monday after spotting what appeared to be a baby in the bus shelter. Prompt first aid was administered to the baby, who was subsequently taken to the hospital for further care. Authorities initiated an operation in the vicinity and advised the public to steer clear of the area, with road closures in effect.

In response to the distressing incident, Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier expressed deep concern over the abandonment and tragic passing of the newborn. She highlighted the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to shed light on the matter, noting similarities to a recent case with different outcomes. Previously, another newborn was discovered at a residence on Bourgeoys Street in Longueuil, wrapped in a blanket with the umbilical cord still attached.

Police released footage in a bid to identify a person of interest linked to the recent case, emphasizing that the two incidents are unrelated. Mayor Fournier assured that the city will closely follow the investigation’s progress while ensuring that the individual under scrutiny receives essential physical and psychological support during this vulnerable period.
