In 1977, the Toronto Blue Jays were officially welcomed as the ninth expansion team in Major League Baseball. However, the team faced challenges in gaining popularity. To boost their image, Paul Beeston, the general manager of the Jays at the time, sought to create a theme song for the team in 1982. Beeston enlisted the help of songwriter and advertising specialist Jack Lenz, resulting in the creation of the iconic anthem, “OK Blue Jays.”

Released in 1983, the song gained traction when the Blue Jays made it to the World Series in both 1992 and 1993. Now, after 32 years, the team has once again secured a spot in the World Series.

The creative process behind “OK Blue Jays” involved a collaboration between songwriters Jack Lenz and Tony Kosinec, singer Keith Hampshire, guitarist Mike Francis, drummer Barry Keane, and Bernie Finkelstein, the founder of True North Records. The song was inspired by the team’s “OK” branding, transformed into a catchy chant that resonated with fans.

The recording session for the song brought together a talented nine-piece band at Toronto’s Eastern Studio, including notable musicians like Mike Francis and Barry Keane. The presence of Ralph Fraser, a renowned jazz pianist and Maple Leafs organist, added a special touch to the recording.

“OK Blue Jays” gained popularity upon its initial release and was later revived in 1985 during the Jays’ playoff run. Bernie Finkelstein played a pivotal role in promoting the song, leading to increased sales and recognition, especially during the team’s consecutive World Series victories in 1992 and 1993.

Despite the song’s success, the creators and contributors reminisced about the lighthearted and fun atmosphere during the recording process. The enduring appeal of “OK Blue Jays” lies in its innocence and connection to the spirit of supporting one’s home team.

Looking back on the impact of the song, the team’s involvement in the World Series, and the fleeting nature of success in both sports and music, the legacy of “OK Blue Jays” remains a cherished memory for all involved.
