Mark Arendz, a highly accomplished athlete from Prince Edward Island, is currently participating in a Para World Cup event in Germany. In an interesting turn of events, his presence can also be noticed in Island grocery stores. Arendz is prominently featured on boxes of Cheerios as part of a new campaign by General Mills, which celebrates Canada’s athletes gearing up for the 2026 Paralympic and Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
Expressing his thoughts on this unique opportunity, Arendz shared with CBC’s Island Morning how special it is to have athletes like him showcased on breakfast and snack tables across the country. Despite losing his left arm in a childhood accident, Arendz has excelled in his Paralympic career, clinching a total of 12 medals, including two gold, in biathlon and cross-country skiing.
He emphasized the significance of campaigns like these, hoping that seeing athletes on cereal boxes would spark conversations among children about sports and the compelling narratives behind each athlete. Arendz sees his role in inspiring the next generation by sharing his experiences, wisdom, and knowledge to pave the way for success in sports.
Preparing for his fifth Paralympic Games in March, the Para-Nordic skier from Hartsville, P.E.I., is gearing up for the upcoming competition with dedication and focus. Drawing from his past Games experiences, he acknowledges the importance of learning from each event to enhance his performance. Arendz emphasized the evolving nature of each Games and the need to adapt preparations accordingly based on maturity and specific game objectives.
With a focus on enhancing his speed for the 2026 Games, Arendz is determined to excel when he hits the snow on March 7. While acknowledging that he may be approaching the twilight of his professional athletic career at 35, he remains committed to pushing himself to achieve his best performance. He highlighted the constant pursuit of self-improvement in various aspects of his sport to enhance his overall performance on race day.
The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics, scheduled from March 6 to 15, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Winter Paralympics. Over 600 athletes will compete in 79 medal events across six sports, including alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, snowboard, and wheelchair curling.
