Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to travel to Germany later this week to attend the prestigious Munich Security Conference, coinciding with Canada’s efforts to revamp its defense policy. Carney’s office confirmed his departure to Munich on Wednesday, where he will remain until Sunday.

The Munich Security Conference serves as a platform for world leaders to engage in discussions on critical defense issues, especially amidst the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump’s disruptive actions on the global stage. Trump’s recent directives, such as the attempted arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year and his controversial proposition to acquire Greenland by force, have raised concerns about the stability of the NATO military alliance.

The organizers of the Munich conference have published a report that references Carney’s address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he advocated for collaboration among middle powers to counteract economic coercion by major powers. Additionally, Carney is set to hold meetings with industry leaders during his stay in Munich to promote investment opportunities in Canada’s vital mineral, energy, and technology sectors.
