Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed concerns over Canada’s excessive regulation and insufficient investments in clean energy and technology. In an interview with CBC News, Carney emphasized the need for tangible actions rather than just regulatory measures that lead to no real progress.

Carney, who founded a global banking group to combat climate change, faced scrutiny for signing an agreement with Alberta that could facilitate a new oil pipeline to British Columbia’s northwest coast. This agreement also involved suspending the federal oil and gas emissions cap and Alberta’s clean electricity regulations, which were integral parts of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s climate strategy.

Acknowledging the country’s shortfall in meeting its 2030 climate targets, Carney highlighted the importance of initiatives like carbon capture and storage and nuclear power generation, which were central to the Alberta deal. The agreement also included increasing the industrial carbon price in Alberta to a minimum of $130 per tonne.

Following the agreement with Alberta, former Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault resigned from Carney’s cabinet citing strong opposition to the deal. Carney mentioned making adjustments to the agreement in response to Guilbeault’s concerns while respecting his decision to step down.

Carney reiterated the significance of a pipeline supported by carbon capture technology and various stakeholders in Canada’s interests. He emphasized that any pipeline project must adhere to the conditions outlined in the agreement with Alberta.

During a parliamentary session, the Conservatives attempted to pass a motion regarding oil pipelines, which excluded key environmental aspects addressed in the Alberta agreement. The motion was defeated, with Carney emphasizing the need to consider all aspects of the deal before proceeding with the pipeline project.

Alberta officials aim to commence construction on the pipeline by 2029, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the agreement. Carney underscored the importance of fulfilling all components of the deal to move forward with the pipeline project successfully.
