Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged for the prompt execution of the initial stage of the U.S.-proposed peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, in light of the recent announcement of a deal late on Wednesday. According to U.S. President Donald Trump, the agreement entails Hamas releasing all remaining Israeli captives and Israel withdrawing its troops to a mutually agreed-upon demarcation line. Carney commended Trump, along with representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, for their roles in achieving this crucial first phase.
Expressing his relief at the imminent reunion of the hostages with their families, Carney emphasized the significance of this development in bringing a sense of achievable peace after enduring years of hardship. Canada’s call for the swift implementation of all agreed terms and the collective effort towards a fair and enduring peace was reiterated by Carney.
If realized, the deal would mark a significant advancement toward ending a long-standing conflict that has escalated into a broader regional crisis. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also extended his congratulations to President Trump for the substantial progress made towards securing a lasting peace, emphasizing the importance of the safe return of all hostages and the cessation of violence to pave the way for a prosperous future.
Further coordination efforts were revealed by Carney, who disclosed his recent conversations with key figures in Trump’s peace initiative, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law. Carney highlighted Canada’s collaboration with Gulf and Arab nations in support of the U.S. president’s 20-point peace blueprint.
Trump’s proposed plan includes provisions for a ceasefire, an exchange of hostages between Hamas and Israel, a gradual Israeli retreat from the Palestinian territory, disarming Hamas, and establishing an interim administration overseen by an international body. Blair is expected to play a role in the envisioned “peace board” to supervise and guide the implementation of a potential ceasefire in Gaza, as per Trump’s plan. Kushner, serving as one of the president’s envoys in the peace negotiations, is actively involved in the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
While cautiously optimistic about the progress in negotiations, Carney acknowledged the existing challenge of determining the governing authority in Gaza post-conflict. Notably, there is uncertainty regarding the future governance of Gaza, with diverging viewpoints among involved parties on this critical aspect.
Ongoing military operations by Israel in Gaza have resulted in extensive devastation in the region. Despite a reduction in military activities at Trump’s directive, Israel has not completely ceased its strikes. Gaza authorities reported significant casualties and hostage situations, underscoring the urgency of resolving the conflict and restoring stability in the region.
