Parks Canada is currently conducting an investigation into a suspected poaching incident involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 in the marsh area of the park. Authorities are seeking information from individuals who may have witnessed the illegal discharge of a firearm or noticed any suspicious individuals or vehicles in the area during that timeframe.

According to a statement released by the government agency, poaching is considered a serious violation under the Canada National Parks Act. Officials are particularly interested in obtaining dashcam footage from various locations within the park, including the park entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas.

Debra Parker, a regular visitor to Point Pelee, expressed her distress over the incident, noting that a nesting female swan was allegedly targeted based on photographs taken by a friend who reported the discovery to park officials. Another visitor, Melissa Hargreaves, described observing the female swan peacefully tending to her nest the day before the incident, emphasizing the heartbreaking impact of the poaching.

Photographer Larry Strung, who visited the park and captured images of the swans, shared his surprise at the close proximity of the nesting swans to the boardwalk. He expressed concern about the potential disturbance caused by visitors but never anticipated deliberate harm to the birds, highlighting their grace and beauty.

Residents and visitors alike have expressed shock and sadness over the poaching incident, with calls for the responsible party to be apprehended and face the maximum penalty. The community remains hopeful that justice will be served for the harm inflicted upon the waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park.
