Emergency power cuts affected multiple Ukrainian cities and neighboring Moldova on Saturday, officials confirmed. This incident occurred in the backdrop of a commitment from the Kremlin to U.S. President Donald Trump to halt attacks on Kyiv as Ukraine faces a harsh winter.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal attributed the outages to a technical issue impacting power lines connecting Ukraine and Moldova. The malfunction triggered a cascade effect in Ukraine’s power grid, activating automatic protection systems.

Reports indicated blackouts in Kyiv, as well as the Zhytomyr and Kharkiv regions in central and northeastern Ukraine, respectively. The power shortage disrupted water supplies in the Ukrainian capital and led to the temporary suspension of the city’s subway due to low voltage.

Moldova also experienced significant power outages, including in the capital, Chisinau, due to the loss of power lines in Ukraine triggering the automatic protection system, according to Moldova’s energy minister, Dorin Junghietu.

The widespread outage followed a series of Russian strikes on Ukraine’s already fragile energy infrastructure, exacerbating long periods of severe power deficits. Russian tactics to deprive Ukrainian civilians of essential services during the winter have intensified hardships as temperatures plummet below usual levels.

Ukraine anticipates enduring extreme cold for the upcoming week, with temperatures expected to plummet to -30°C in some areas, as reported by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. President Trump mentioned that President Putin had agreed to a temporary cessation of targeting Kyiv and other Ukrainian locations amid the extreme weather conditions.

Negotiations involving U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian officials are scheduled in Abu Dhabi next week following talks in late January. However, hurdles to a peace agreement persist, primarily concerning the status of occupied Ukrainian territories and Moscow’s territorial demands.

President Zelenskyy expressed skepticism about Russia’s intentions to end the conflict, citing ongoing hostilities despite international efforts to broker peace. Amid the challenging circumstances, Ukrainians in Kyiv gathered by the frozen Dnipro River, seeking solace despite enduring cold homes without basic amenities like water and electricity.

Residents remain cautious about the prospects of a lasting peace agreement, with many resigned to enduring hardships while hoping for a resolution to the conflict.
