Rockalina, an eastern box turtle, experienced a remarkable transformation over the past year. Initially found in a weak state with various health issues after living for almost five decades on a kitchen floor in New Jersey, she is now thriving at a wildlife sanctuary. For the first time since her rescue in 1977, Rockalina has a companion of her own species, a baby turtle named Pebble.
Chris Leone, founder of Garden State Tortoise, shared that Rockalina’s condition was critical when she was first brought to their attention. She had been living in inappropriate conditions, leading to deformities and health complications. Through dedicated care, Rockalina’s health significantly improved, and she now enjoys a better quality of life under the sanctuary’s care.
Leone emphasized that eastern box turtles are not suited for indoor living, highlighting the importance of providing them with a natural habitat. The rescue and rehabilitation efforts have been documented on YouTube, garnering a significant following. As Rockalina continues to thrive, the decision was made to introduce Pebble to provide her with companionship, as these turtles typically live in colonies.
The interaction between Rockalina and Pebble has been positive, with both turtles displaying curiosity and interest in each other. Leone stresses the importance of preserving turtles in their natural habitats, noting that while Rockalina cannot be returned to the wild, efforts are being made to ensure her happiness and well-being for potentially many more years to come.
