A private jet crashed on Thursday while attempting to return to an airport in North Carolina shortly after takeoff, resulting in the tragic deaths of all seven individuals onboard, including retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family, as confirmed by authorities.

The Cessna C550 burst into flames upon impact with the ground after departing from Statesville Regional Airport, located approximately 72 kilometers north of Charlotte. The aircraft encountered difficulties and crashed while attempting to return to the airport, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Flight records indicate that the plane was registered to a company owned by Biffle. The cause of the crash and the reasons for the return to the airport in adverse weather conditions remain unknown.

Among those aboard the plane were Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their children Ryder, aged 5, and Emma, aged 14, as reported by the highway patrol and a family statement. The other passengers were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.

A collective statement from the families expressed the deep loss felt by their loved ones’ absence, stating, “Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives.”

Greg Biffle, aged 55, achieved success in NASCAR, winning over 50 races across various circuits, including 19 at the Cup Series level. He also secured the Trucks Series championship in 2000 and the Xfinity Series title in 2002.

NASCAR expressed profound sadness over the tragic incident, describing Biffle as more than a champion driver but also as a cherished member of the NASCAR community and a fierce competitor who made a lasting impact on the sport.

The aircraft, en route to Florida, departed from the Stateville airport shortly after 10 a.m. local time, according to FlightAware.com tracking data.

Witnesses, including golfers at the nearby Lakewood Golf Club, were shocked by the crash, with some dropping to the ground as the plane passed overhead. Debris from the crash covered the ninth hole, causing alarm among those present.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are conducting investigations into the incident.

In a previous humanitarian act, Biffle had been recognized for his efforts following Hurricane Helene, where he used his personal helicopter to deliver aid to flooded areas in western North Carolina.

Representative Richard Hudson of North Carolina recalled Cristina Biffle’s eagerness to assist with relief efforts in Jamaica, highlighting the Biffles’ altruistic nature.

Craig Wadsworth, a friend of Biffle’s who often assisted with charitable endeavors, was described as someone who always extended a helping hand and had a positive impact on those around him.

The joint family statement also paid tribute to Dennis Dutton and his son Jack, acknowledging the profound impact of their loss on those who knew them.
