Roger Federer has been selected for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, as announced by the Rhode Island-based Hall on Wednesday. Federer, the first man to secure 20 Grand Slam singles titles, was part of a remarkable era alongside rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, which he described as “a golden time for tennis.” He was the sole candidate to garner adequate support in the player category for the Hall’s 2026 class.

Players become eligible after a five-year hiatus from the tour and must receive at least 75% of the votes from a diverse voting group comprising tennis media, historians, industry figures, Hall members, and fans. The voting results are not disclosed by the Hall.

Mary Carillo, a TV announcer, journalist, and former player, was elected in the contributor category. The formal induction ceremony is scheduled for August.

In response to his election, Federer expressed humility, stating, “I’ve always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me.” He joins an elite group of eight men with a career Grand Slam, including eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Open titles, five US Open titles, and one French Open title.

Federer’s first Grand Slam victory was at the All England Club in 2003. Over the years, he surpassed Pete Sampras’ record of 14 major titles by clinching his 15th at Wimbledon in 2009 and achieved his 20th at the 2018 Australian Open.

Despite his numerous accomplishments, Federer has always maintained that his love for the game surpasses any records. He emphasized, “I don’t really feel like I’m playing for the records; I play this game because I love it.”

Although Federer’s Grand Slam count was eventually surpassed by Nadal and Djokovic, his impact on the sport remains undeniable. With a remarkable forehand, serve, and all-court style, Federer claimed 103 singles titles and won 1,251 matches, figures second only to Jimmy Connors in the Open era.

Federer spent a total of 310 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings, including a record 237 consecutive weeks. He also led Switzerland to the Davis Cup title in 2014 and secured a doubles gold medal with Stan Wawrinka at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Regarded as an ambassador for tennis, Federer played his final match at Wimbledon in 2021, just before turning 40. His retirement was solidified in the subsequent year when he bid farewell by partnering with Nadal in the Laver Cup.

Throughout his career, Federer set a high standard that inspired younger players like Carlos Alcaraz, the current top-ranked player at 22 years old with six Grand Slam titles. Alcaraz praised Federer’s elegance and humility on and off the court, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to the sport.

Federer’s dominance was exemplified by reaching a record 10 consecutive Grand Slam finals and appearing in 18 of 19 Slam finals. Djokovic once described Federer’s achievements as “results that didn’t seem human.”

Mary Carillo, known as the first woman to provide regular tennis commentary on broadcasts, has received numerous accolades for her contributions to sports journalism. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share the stories of tennis and acknowledged the significance of her induction into the Hall of Fame.

Looking ahead, the next Hall of Fame ballot will feature holdovers Juan Martin del Potro and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the player category, while Serena Williams and Ash Barty will be eligible for the first time after concluding their careers in 2022.
