Russia Restricts Apple’s FaceTime Over Alleged Misuse

Russia has taken action to restrict Apple’s FaceTime app, as announced by the state communications watchdog. This move comes shortly after the blocking of the U.S. children’s gaming platform Roblox. The Russian authorities claim that FaceTime is being misused for criminal activities, while Roblox is accused of disseminating extremist materials and “LGBT propaganda.”

These restrictions are part of a broader crackdown on foreign tech platforms, including YouTube by Google, WhatsApp by Meta, and the Telegram messaging service. Critics view these measures as censorship and an expansion of state surveillance over private communications, while Russian officials defend them as necessary law enforcement actions.

Roskomnadzor, the communications regulator, justified the decision by stating that FaceTime is allegedly being used to coordinate terrorist attacks, recruit individuals for criminal activities, and perpetrate fraud against Russian citizens. However, the watchdog did not provide evidence to support these claims.

Apple has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the FaceTime block, an app that facilitates free video and audio calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Reports from Moscow residents indicate that attempts to use FaceTime on Thursday resulted in a message stating “User unavailable,” with connections failing.

In recent months, Roskomnadzor has ramped up efforts to restrict access to Western media and tech platforms that violate Russian laws. This includes limitations on WhatsApp and Telegram calls in August due to alleged non-cooperation with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases.

Furthermore, last year, language-learning app Duolingo removed content related to what Russia terms “non-traditional sexual relations” following warnings from the watchdog.

Regarding the Roblox ban, Roskomnadzor blocked access to the platform, citing concerns about extremist content and “LGBT propaganda.” In response, a Roblox spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to compliance with local regulations and highlighted their safety measures to prevent harmful content.

Roblox, with an average of 151.5 million daily active users in the third quarter of this year, has faced bans in multiple countries due to concerns about child safety and exploitation on the platform. Russia’s classification of the “international LGBT movement” as extremist in 2023 has led to severe legal consequences for individuals associated with LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Overall, Russia’s recent actions reflect a broader trend of tightening control over digital platforms in the country, raising questions about freedom of expression and privacy rights.
