The documentary “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” was scheduled for its Disney+ debut on September 21. However, Sarah McLachlan decided to cancel performances in solidarity with free speech rights. McLachlan expressed concerns about the current situation, highlighting the challenges faced in protecting women’s, trans, and queer rights and defending free speech. She made these statements ahead of the U.S. premiere of the documentary, which chronicles the influential festival she established in 1997.
This decision by McLachlan came shortly after ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel and his show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, due to controversial remarks he made about MAGA supporters following Charlie Kirk’s death. Kirk, a right-wing activist who opposed transgender rights and raised funds against transgender medical care, had a vocal following. The fallout from Kimmel’s suspension led to an escalating boycott of Disney, causing disruptions on the Disney+ website and a decline in the company’s stock value. ABC News Studios, a Disney subsidiary, is the distributor of the “Lilith Fair” documentary in the United States.
McLachlan emphasized the importance of pushing forward as an artist and a woman, advocating for unity and understanding in the face of uncertainty. She announced the cancellation of surprise performances during the event to show solidarity in support of free speech. Although the lineup of performers was not officially confirmed, sources hinted at appearances by McLachlan, Jewel, and potentially Olivia Rodrigo, who is featured in the documentary.
Previously premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” is now accessible for streaming on CBC Gem.
