The Downie Wenjack Fund (DWF) is commemorating the 10th anniversary of Gord Downie’s project, “Secret Path,” which includes an album, graphic novel, and short film, with a special concert featuring Indigenous artists on October 23. “Secret Path” narrates the tragic tale of Chanie Wenjack, an Anishinaabe boy who perished while attempting to escape from a residential school in 1966. In a gesture of reconciliation, DWF is organizing a concert at Toronto’s Concert Hall showcasing artists like Aysanabee, William Prince, Amanda Rheaume, Wolf Saga, and others who will perform songs from “Secret Path,” renditions of The Tragically Hip’s music, and original compositions. The proceeds from the event will bolster DWF’s initiatives, and tickets can be purchased online.
Harriet Visitor, a founding board member of DWF and the niece of the late Chanie Wenjack, emphasized, “Chanie’s story lies at the core of ‘Secret Path,’ mirroring the experiences of over 150,000 Indigenous children separated from their families and communities to attend residential schools.” Visitor expressed hope that the anniversary would prompt individuals to honor Chanie by sharing his narrative and uncovering the truth about that historical period.
Leading up to the concert, various musicians have released covers of “Secret Path” tracks on DWF’s YouTube channel. These interpretations include Tanya Tagaq and July Talk’s rendition of “Haunt Them, Haunt Them, Haunt Them,” Rheaume’s “The Stranger,” Julian Taylor’s version of “Son,” and more.
Mike Downie, another founding board member of DWF and Gord Downie’s brother, reflected, “A decade later, Chanie’s story has resonated with people and communities nationwide, inspiring over three million impactful actions advancing reconciliation.” Downie highlighted the enduring commitment to “Secret Path,” urging everyone to contemplate its influence and find ways to contribute to reconciliation efforts.
Additionally, music enthusiasts can revisit “Secret Path in concert” on CBC Gem, featuring Gord Downie’s 2017 concert film.
