Snow and ice pellets expected in western P.E.I. Thursday, says Environment Canada

People in western Prince Edward Island should prepare for significant winter weather on Thursday, according to a special weather statement from Environment Canada.

The statement, currently in effect for all three counties, says 15 to 20 centimetres of snow is expected to fall over western parts of the Island beginning midday Thursday. Winds will be northwesterly with gusts up to 70 km/h.

Queens and Kings counties will also receive precipitation, according to Environment Canada, but it will not necessarily be snow.

“As the the temperature climbs Thursday evening, a messy mix of snow and ice pellets could make roads messy and even some light rain and patchy freezing rain is possible, particularly for central and eastern areas, on Thursday night,” said CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland.

He said flurries are expected to clear by early Frirday morning but roads may still be messy for harder-hit areas.

Environment Canada advises drivers to be prepared for winter road conditions, adding that weather warnings may be issued later.
