Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for New Brunswick on July 14, indicating favorable conditions for thunderstorm development. The watch also mentioned a potential tornado risk.
Despite no severe thunderstorms or tornadoes occurring, social media was flooded with misinformation, unreliable images, and widespread panic. Sander van der Linden, a psychology professor at the University of Cambridge, highlighted how extreme weather events attract misinformation due to real-time urgency and uncertainty.
It’s important to note that an Environment Canada “watch” differs from a “warning.” A watch advises preparation for severe weather, while a warning demands immediate action. Jill Maepea, an Environment Canada meteorologist, clarified that the tornado risk was low when the watch was issued.
Social media users were already alarmed about the storm before the watch was issued, with some misinterpreting the information and spreading false alerts about tornado warnings. Van der Linden emphasized the challenge of interpreting official communications accurately, as cautious messages can sometimes be misinterpreted as alarming.
Following the storm watch, social media remained active with posts criticizing the lack of a storm and sharing fake storm images. AI-generated images further blurred the line between reality and fiction, making it challenging for people to discern the authenticity of online content.
Aaloak Jaswal, head of innovation at the University of New Brunswick’s Data Science and AI Research Institute, warned about the ease of spreading misinformation through AI-generated content. He stressed the importance of verifying sources to combat the spread of fake information during emergencies.
Both Jaswal and van der Linden highlighted the risk of repeated exposure to misinformation and the need for building trust in official information sources. They recommended proactive measures like “pre-bunking” to alert others about potential misinformation and promote a healthy information environment for community safety.
