“South Korea’s Han Duck-soo Reinstated as President Amid U.S. Trade War”

South Korea’s Constitutional Court has overturned the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, reinstating him as the acting president to lead the country through the challenges posed by the U.S. trade war. This decision follows a period of political turmoil in South Korea, with Han immediately resuming his duties after the ruling.

Expressing gratitude for the Court’s judgment and acknowledging the public’s call for an end to political confrontations, Han emphasized his commitment to ensuring stable governance and protecting national interests during the trade war. As South Korea, a major global exporter, faces potential tariffs from the U.S., Han’s focus is on navigating these economic challenges.

The reinstatement of Han comes after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached for briefly implementing martial law in December, triggering a series of leadership changes and legal actions. Han, with over three decades of leadership experience under various administrations, is known for his bipartisan approach, but faced accusations of not doing enough to oppose Yoon’s martial law declaration.

The Constitutional Court’s decision to overturn Han’s impeachment was based on the grounds that he did not violate the constitution or the law. The ruling justices determined that the impeachment motion lacked sufficient support from parliament to proceed, with only one justice in favor of impeachment. The Court’s ongoing deliberations on Yoon’s impeachment are expected to be resolved soon, potentially leading to a new presidential election within 60 days if Yoon is removed from office.

The political uncertainties in South Korea have sparked public demonstrations both in support of and against Yoon, reflecting a divided nation grappling with significant governance challenges. The swift imposition and subsequent repeal of martial law in December 2024 underscored the volatility in the country’s political landscape, drawing attention from international allies like the United States.

As South Korea navigates these complex political and economic dynamics, the reinstatement of Han Duck-soo as acting president marks a pivotal moment in the country’s journey towards stability and democratic governance.
