UPDATE: On December 17, 2025, Farm Lending Canada initiated a discontinuance of claim, resulting in the termination of legal action against Stampede Ranch as per a mutual agreement between the involved parties. This development ensures that the ranch is no longer at risk of receivership.

Stampede Ranch, an iconic property in Southern Alberta with a rich history dating back 135 years, is currently facing a receivership application that could determine its future. The ranch, once managed by Calgary Stampede founder Guy Weadick, encompasses almost 190 acres of agricultural land, event facilities, and livestock operations.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the current operators of Stampede Ranch, situated approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Longview, Alberta, in an effort to recover a $4.4 million debt. Farm Lending Canada Inc. has filed a lawsuit against The Stampede Ranch Ltd., Karl Farms Inc., Karl AG Corp., and Bryce Karl.

Bryce Karl, who serves as a director of Stampede Ranch and Karl AG, holds 100% of the voting shares of Stampede Ranch, as indicated in corporate records. Stampede Ranch should not be confused with the Calgary Stampede Ranch, a separate 22,000-acre property near Hanna, Alberta, primarily dedicated to breeding rodeo horses and bulls.

Originally scheduled for November 2, the receiver application hearing was postponed to December 2. Representatives of Stampede Ranch have stated that they are actively collaborating with a new mortgage lender to secure financing promptly to settle the debt owed to Farm Lending, the party that initiated the receivership application. Successful financing arrangements would lead to the dismissal of the receivership application hearing.

Both parties involved are striving for an amicable resolution to uphold the ranch’s operations and compliance with Foothills County’s land use regulations, according to a statement provided to CBC News. Farm Lending’s legal representative expressed optimism that ongoing refinancing efforts will lead to a successful resolution of the matter.

Legal documents submitted before the receivership application hearing reveal that Karl Farms, in conjunction with Stampede Ranch, borrowed $5 million from Farm Lending in 2024. Farm Lending expressed concerns in the filings about Bryce Karl’s prior issues with the Alberta Energy Regulator, stemming from violations of regulatory orders in 2015 related to unpaid fees and obligations.

Farm Lending’s concerns were further compounded by the petitioning of two other companies owned by Karl into receivership due to prolonged neglect of their well and facility sites, according to the AER. The records also indicate Karl’s previous denial of discharge from bankruptcy in 2014, raising additional red flags for Farm Lending regarding loan repayment risks.

Efforts to secure alternative funding arrangements by Karl were unsuccessful, with Farm Lending highlighting the challenges faced in resolving the debt issue through standstill agreements that did not result in repayment. The potential appointment of a receiver to manage Stampede Ranch operations is seen as a complex process due to the diverse nature of the property’s activities, including agricultural operations, events, and livestock management.

Stampede Ranch has a storied past, having been owned by Guy Weadick and Florence LaDue from 1920 to 1946. Over the years, in addition to cattle operations, the ranch has served various purposes, such as a filming location for TV and movies, a rodeo training facility, and a rehabilitation center for displaced youth.

Plans for the property’s future include expanding its offerings to the public for events like concerts and weddings, as well as constructing additional facilities such as a draft horse barn, campground, cabins, and recreational amenities. Farm Lending has proposed the appointment of Grant Thornton Ltd. as the receiver and manager of the property to oversee potential business operations.

The legal proceedings are ongoing, with both parties scheduled to appear in court on December 2, following a structured litigation schedule leading up to the hearing.
