Residents of Star Blanket Cree Nation recently witnessed the return of bison to their community, a significant event that has not been experienced in recent times. Over the long weekend in May, community members from the area, located around 100 kilometers northeast of Regina, came together to welcome the arrival of a new bison herd, marking a historic milestone for their nation.

Sharon Strongarm, who attended the bison release with her grandchildren, expressed the emotional impact of witnessing the bison return to their lands. She described the moment as spiritual and emphasized the importance of reintroducing the buffalo to their community.

The initiative to bring back the bison was a dream of Ariane Starblanket’s late grandfather, a former chief of Star Blanket. He believed that reintroducing the buffalo would promote healing and enhance food sovereignty within the community. Starblanket, who played a key role in coordinating the bison release, highlighted the significance of the project in preserving cultural heritage and engaging the youth in caring for the animals.

Tristan Starr-Desnomie, one of the selected bison keepers, shared his excitement about taking on this responsibility, which differs from his previous experience caring for cows and horses. He recognized the honor of being chosen and expressed his dedication to ensuring the well-being of the bison herd.

Looking ahead, the community is planning to expand the area where the bison roam. While the ultimate goal is for the bison to provide essential resources like food, clothing, and medicine, currently, the herd serves as an educational tool for the community, with a focus on empowering the younger generation and fostering a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of the buffalo.

The return of the bison to Star Blanket Cree Nation has been a momentous occasion, symbolizing a resurgence of tradition and a commitment to preserving indigenous heritage for future generations.
