A powerful storm sweeping through Newfoundland and Labrador has caused power outages for more than 9,000 residents and led to the evacuation of families in the Trepassey area. The storm also resulted in the destruction of a fish plant in St. Mary’s.
Mayor Wanda Waddleton mentioned that two families from the lower coast of Trepassey were evacuated for safety due to rising water levels breaching the sea wall. The town’s breakwater, damaged in a previous storm, remains unrepaired.
Winds in Trepassey reached 143 km/h, with even higher gusts reported in Cape St. Mary’s. The local fish plant in St. Mary’s was engulfed in flames, leading to its complete destruction before fire crews could intervene.
Mayor Steve Ryan described the unprecedented wind conditions in the area causing damage to properties, including his own, with water seeping into an abandoned fish sauce plant. The town is concerned about potential environmental hazards if the water levels continue to rise.
The storm has also caused widespread power outages affecting over 9,000 Newfoundland Power customers, prompting authorities to advise caution while driving due to increased risks of hydroplaning. Environment Canada issued weather alerts for heavy winds, rainfall, and possible coastal flooding in various regions of the province.
Parts of central and western Newfoundland are experiencing snowfall, with alerts issued for potential accumulations. Southern and eastern Labrador are under a special weather advisory for rain and strong winds, with the situation expected to worsen on Thursday.
Local officials in affected areas, such as St. Vincent’s-St. Stephen’s-Peter’s River and Lamaline, are monitoring the situation closely, particularly the impact on roads and infrastructure. The region is bracing for continued severe weather conditions as the storm progresses.
