The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following an inquiry by the Western Hockey League that revealed violations of the league’s conduct standards. Dean DeSilva resigned from his role as head coach after receiving a five-game suspension and a $10,000 fine from the WHL. The league stated that DeSilva breached conduct standards during two on-ice incidents while handling player discipline.

In a statement on Friday, WHL commissioner Dan Near emphasized the importance of accountability within the league’s culture. He highlighted the commitment to holding all members, including players, coaches, and executives, to consistent conduct standards. Near emphasized that when these standards are not met, necessary actions will be taken to maintain integrity and safeguard the well-being of all involved in the game.

DeSilva’s suspension commenced on November 5 and concluded on November 11. However, on November 14, the Broncos announced his resignation. General manager Chad Leslie stated that after careful consideration, it was mutually agreed that DeSilva’s resignation was the best course of action for both parties. The Broncos reiterated their dedication to fostering a positive environment for all players.

This development follows the departure of former head coach Devan Praught from the Swift Current Broncos two years ago, following a mutual decision to part ways after Praught received a five-game suspension for allegedly breaching WHL conduct standards.

Additionally, on Friday, the WHL disclosed the suspension of Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, along with a $10,000 fine imposed on the team. Anholt was found to have violated conduct standards by employing intimidating behavior and language in a post-game address to players after a defeat to Edmonton in October. Anholt will be permitted to resume his duties on November 26, acknowledging his failure to meet expectations in his communication with the team.

Both investigations were initiated by the WHL following reports received through its anonymous tip line, the WHL Respect Line, underscoring the league’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and accountable environment within the sport.
