A judge in Saskatoon has sentenced a 15-year-old boy to 18 months in connection with the death of a 12-year-old friend. The incident occurred when the boy, who was 13 at the time, accidentally shot the victim while playing with a gun and pretending to be a gangster.
The sentencing includes one year in open custody, six months under community supervision, and 18 months of probation. Judge Lisa Watson expressed her hopes for the boy to make positive life choices and emphasized the need for him to avoid future legal issues.
The court disclosed that the tragic event took place during a gathering where the boys were consuming alcohol and handling a modified firearm. Videos and photos indicated that the accused pointed the gun at the victim, resulting in a fatal shot to the head. Another 12-year-old boy involved in the incident previously pleaded guilty to similar charges and received a two-year sentence.
Judge Watson acknowledged that while the shooting was unintentional, the reckless behavior of playing with a firearm under the influence of alcohol posed significant risks. The court emphasized the foreseeable harm caused by such actions.
The defense attorney described the situation as a preventable tragedy, highlighting the dangers of mixing alcohol, firearms, and lack of supervision. The victim’s family has been deeply affected by the loss, with some members struggling with substance abuse and legal issues following the tragic incident.
While the Crown had pushed for a maximum sentence, Judge Watson considered the mitigating factors, including the boy’s remorse, efforts to reform, and positive lifestyle changes. As part of the probation terms, the boy must adhere to strict conditions, including counseling, curfew, and a ban on alcohol, drugs, and firearms for a specified period.
The sentencing aims to hold the boy accountable for his actions while providing opportunities for rehabilitation and positive growth. The court stressed the importance of learning from the incident and making responsible choices moving forward.
