Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit, known for her elegance and charm in the Thai monarchy, passed away at the age of 93, according to the Thai Royal Household bureau on Saturday. Since suffering a stroke in 2012, Sirikit had been leading a private life.
As the wife of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand’s longest-serving monarch, Sirikit stood by his side for 70 years, captivating the nation with their philanthropic endeavors. Renowned for her grace and fashion sense, she also made a lasting impression on the international stage during their overseas visits.
Born in 1932, Sirikit Kitiyakara, daughter of Thailand’s ambassador to France, lived a privileged life. She met Bhumibol while studying music and language in Paris, leading to their engagement in 1949 and marriage a year later.
Sirikit’s collaboration with French designer Pierre Balmain in creating striking outfits from Thai silk helped revive Thailand’s silk industry. Over the years, she accompanied the king on trips to rural areas, supporting development projects and showcasing traditional weaving practices.
Recognized as a symbol of maternal virtue and renowned for her charitable endeavors, Sirikit’s passing will be mourned in Thailand, where criticism of the royal family is restricted by strict laws on lese-majeste. She is survived by her son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and three daughters.
