Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni emerged victorious over Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa with a commanding 7-1 win in the women’s final at the HearingLife Canadian Open held in Saskatoon. Tirinzoni took an early lead of 2-0 after the first end, which Fujisawa managed to narrow down to one point in the second end. Following a scoreless third end, Tirinzoni’s team secured five points over the next three ends, including a triple in the sixth.
In the semifinals on Saturday, Tirinzoni, seeded second, defeated Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura with a close score of 5-4, propelling her into the final match on Sunday. On the other hand, the tenth-seeded Fujisawa first eliminated top-ranked Rachel Homan of Ottawa in the quarterfinals before clinching a 7-5 victory over Momoha Tabata of Japan in the semifinals.
In the men’s final, also held on Sunday, Yannick Schwaller from Switzerland took the lead by scoring four points in the fifth end, establishing a significant 6-2 advantage over Ross Whyte from Scotland. Whyte managed to score only one point in the sixth end before conceding defeat. Schwaller had secured his spot in the final by defeating John Shuster from Duluth, Minn., with a score of 7-5 in the semifinals on Saturday, while Whyte overcame Bruce Mouat from Scotland with a score of 6-4 in the other semifinal match.
This victory marked Schwaller’s first Grand Slam title, as he triumphed over Whyte with a final score of 7-4 in the men’s final at the HearingLife Canadian Open.
