Carlos Alcaraz has unfortunately had to pull out of the Davis Cup Finals in Italy due to a hamstring injury, dashing his hopes of winning the prestigious tournament for Spain once again. The top-seeded Alcaraz expressed his disappointment at having to withdraw from the competition following advice from medical professionals. He revealed that he is suffering from a right hamstring edema, which has made it impossible for him to compete.
The injury occurred during the ATP Finals last week, where he was diagnosed with muscle overload and swelling in his right hamstring. Alcaraz, who always considered representing Spain as a great honor, expressed his regret at not being able to contribute to their Davis Cup campaign this year.
Despite the setback, Alcaraz remains optimistic about his recovery, stating that he is not concerned about any long-term effects of the injury. He plans to undergo daily treatment and exercises to expedite his healing process. The 22-year-old made his Davis Cup debut in 2022 and holds an impressive 6-2 record, with a notable 5-1 record in singles matches. Spain’s last Davis Cup victory was in 2019.
Alcaraz also missed the 2023 Davis Cup due to fitness issues. In the previous year, he and the Spanish team were eliminated in the initial round of the Final 8 in Malaga, marking the conclusion of Rafael Nadal’s illustrious career. Alcaraz, who has a strong desire to clinch the Davis Cup title in the future, was supposed to lead Spain against the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals in Bologna.
Having already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking, Alcaraz suffered a defeat to Sinner in Turin, ending his season on a bittersweet note. Despite this loss, he has had a remarkable year, winning the French Open and U.S. Open and accumulating six Grand Slam titles in total.
