Seven Toronto police officers are embroiled in a corruption investigation linked to a plot to murder a corrections official, raising concerns about public trust in law enforcement. Mayor Olivia Chow emphasized that Police Chief Myron Demkiw must regain the community’s trust, stating that officers found guilty of crimes should face imprisonment.

During an unrelated event, Chow stressed the importance of public trust in the police force, highlighting the need for the chief to root out criminal officers to restore faith among Torontonians.

An extensive investigation conducted by York Regional Police resulted in the arrest of the officers on charges ranging from conspiracy to commit murder to drug trafficking. Additionally, 19 civilians were apprehended on various charges.

Expressing disappointment, York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween labeled the situation a dark day for law enforcement. Police Chief Demkiw echoed the sentiment, asserting that corruption has no place in policing as it undermines the public’s trust.

During a news conference addressing an organized crime and corruption investigation, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw emphasized the necessity to combat organized crime within the police service to maintain integrity and trust. He vowed to thoroughly investigate the allegations to uphold the service’s commitment to transparency.

The probe has raised serious questions about police integrity and public safety, according to Shelley Carroll, a city councillor and chair of the Toronto Police Service board.

When asked if Demkiw should step down, Carroll expressed confidence in him, stating that he is dedicated to upholding the values of the Toronto Police Service and uncovering the truth behind the investigation.

In a letter to Inspector General Ryan Teschner, Demkiw requested an inspection of key areas within the police service to address concerns raised by the investigation, acknowledging the unsettling impact of the news on Torontonians and police members.

Mayor Chow endorsed Demkiw’s call for an independent review to address the unfolding situation.

The Toronto Police Association expressed distress over the allegations, emphasizing their zero tolerance for corrupt behavior among members.

Premier Doug Ford characterized the investigation as disturbing but refrained from tarnishing the overall reputation of the police force, citing the exemplary work of the majority of officers and attributing any misconduct to a few individuals.

Ford affirmed his confidence in Chief Demkiw’s ability to address the situation, acknowledging the challenges faced by the police service.
