Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, shared her experience of losing her mother and taking on the role of primary caregiver for her older brother, Stuart. Living together as neurodivergent siblings in their middle age poses both challenges and moments of joy.

Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires specialized care, including assistance with daily activities like eating, transfers, grooming, and emotional support. Simone recalls the past struggles of dealing with societal misunderstandings of Stuart’s condition, especially during their childhood.

Acknowledging her own struggles with ADHD, Simone emphasizes the importance of adapting her behavior to create a harmonious living environment for both herself and Stuart. She highlights the need to manage her own tendencies to avoid triggering Stuart’s emotional outbursts, showcasing the delicate balance of cohabiting with a neurodivergent sibling.

Reflecting on their shared experiences and the lack of support in their younger years, Simone now embraces her role as Stuart’s advocate and caregiver. Despite sacrificing some personal pursuits, she finds fulfillment in nurturing their relationship and creating a supportive living arrangement for two siblings who navigate the world differently.

Through compassion, understanding, and shared decision-making, Simone strives to make their living situation conducive to both their needs. This newfound responsibility not only challenges her past perceptions but also offers a chance to rewrite their story as siblings in a more supportive and caring environment.
