Danica Nelson, a Toronto resident, shared her personal experience of being consumed by work and burnout in pursuit of financial stability. Growing up with limited financial resources, Danica developed a deep-rooted fear of scarcity, driving her to relentlessly work and avoid debt.
Despite graduating debt-free, Danica maintained frugal habits, always prioritizing financial security. However, her intense work ethic and fear of debt led to burnout. Realizing the need for a change, she took a six-month sabbatical to recharge and reflect.
Returning to work, Danica landed a higher-paying job but fell back into old patterns, overworking herself to maintain financial stability. Recognizing the unhealthy cycle, she sought help and eventually took a stress leave to prioritize her well-being over work.
After being laid off, Danica embraced the opportunity for a fresh start, moving to Spain with her partner. She founded Liberty Leave, a company supporting women in planning sabbaticals without compromising financial security, based on her own healing journey.
Today, Danica values wealth beyond money, focusing on time freedom, community, and mental well-being. While still budget-conscious, she now prioritizes self-care and fulfillment, learning that inner peace is invaluable compared to financial gain.
