A tragic incident in Cornwall, Ont., over the weekend has brought attention to a group of individuals who have only recently had their experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) acknowledged, according to a local women’s shelter. The Cornwall police reported that an 81-year-old man shot his former 80-year-old partner and her 83-year-old male friend before taking his own life on Saturday. The male friend died from his injuries, while the woman remains hospitalized with serious wounds. Although the identities of the victims and the shooter have not been disclosed, authorities have classified the event as a heartbreaking case of IPV.

Danielle McCormick, a public educator at Baldwin House, a women’s shelter in Cornwall, expressed shock at the shooting, lamenting that they could have provided a safe haven for the victim if she had reached out for help. McCormick noted an increase in calls from elderly women facing IPV over the past decade, with many seeking clarification on what constitutes IPV, which encompasses verbal, emotional, financial, and physical abuse. She highlighted a prevalent belief among the elderly that once married, a wife is almost owned by her husband.

Detective Staff Sgt. Tracey Pilon of the Cornwall Police Service revealed a rise in reports of IPV involving older individuals, from 19 cases in 2021 to 27 in 2025. However, Pilon emphasized that the actual number of cases is significantly higher, as most survivors do not report the abuse due to fears of losing family ties or housing stability. Erin Lee, the executive director of Lanark County Interval House, pointed out that older generations may not recognize the abuse they endure, considering it taboo to discuss. Lee highlighted the unique risk factors faced by elderly couples, such as declining health and increased isolation, as revealed in a report by Ontario’s Domestic Violence Death Review Committee.

To address the issue of senior IPV, Lee stressed the importance of integrating violence assessments into elderly care across various systems. She recommended resources like Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario and the Seniors Safety Line for victims seeking support. McCormick expressed hope that the rise in calls to their shelter indicates greater awareness among elderly women about recognizing and speaking out against abuse. She urged individuals to reach out for help and emphasized the importance of breaking the silence surrounding IPV, a sentiment echoed by Pilon, who emphasized the collaborative efforts between Cornwall police and community services to support survivors.

The tragic event has underscored the urgent need for awareness and support for seniors experiencing intimate partner violence, urging individuals to speak out and seek assistance from available resources.
