The Trump administration has announced its decision to pull out from numerous international organizations, including the UN’s population agency and the UN treaty responsible for global climate negotiations. This move signifies a further step back from global collaboration.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending support for 66 organizations, agencies, and commissions. This action follows his directive to review the U.S.’s involvement in and funding for international organizations, including those linked to the United Nations. The majority of targeted entities are UN-related bodies focusing on climate, labor, and other issues deemed by the administration as promoting diversity and “woke” initiatives.

In addition to UN entities, the list includes non-UN organizations such as the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the Global Counterterrorism Forum. The State Department highlighted reasons for the withdrawal, citing redundancy, mismanagement, wastefulness, and threats to national sovereignty and prosperity.

The decision to exit organizations fostering global cooperation to tackle worldwide challenges coincides with the administration’s recent military actions and threats that have unsettled both allies and adversaries. Previous withdrawals from agencies like the World Health Organization and the UN Human Rights Council demonstrate a shift in how the U.S. engages with international bodies, selecting which ones align with its agenda.

The decision to withdraw from the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change underscores the administration’s stance on distancing from climate-focused organizations. Trump’s skepticism towards climate change led to the U.S. exiting the Paris climate agreement. Critics, including former White House national climate adviser Gina McCarthy, have condemned the move as shortsighted and damaging to global efforts against climate change.

Experts warn that the U.S. withdrawal could impede global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and hinder progress on climate change without American cooperation. The State Department confirmed plans to exit several other organizations, with ongoing reviews for additional withdrawals.

The move represents a significant departure from previous administrations’ approaches to international bodies and underscores the current administration’s prioritization of U.S. interests in global engagements.
