U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. military to restart nuclear weapons testing after a hiatus of 33 years. The announcement was made by Trump on Truth Social, the social media platform, while en route to a trade negotiation meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. Trump emphasized the need for the U.S. to test its nuclear arsenal in response to similar programs by other countries, particularly mentioning Russia’s recent testing of a nuclear-powered super torpedo.

China, on the other hand, has significantly expanded its nuclear stockpile, doubling its arsenal to an estimated 600 nuclear weapons by 2025. Concerns have been raised by military experts over China’s anticipated possession of over 1,000 nuclear weapons by 2030, with capabilities that can reach the United States.

China has urged the U.S. to refrain from conducting nuclear tests, highlighting the importance of upholding commitments under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Trump, while returning to Washington, justified the decision to resume testing, citing the need to keep pace with other nuclear powers.

The Arms Control Association reports that the United States and Russia currently possess substantial nuclear warheads, with Russia recently showcasing advanced nuclear capabilities. Despite global efforts to curb nuclear testing, certain countries have conducted tests in violation of international agreements.

Trump’s move to resume nuclear testing has sparked criticism and concerns about potential repercussions on global nuclear disarmament efforts. The decision could potentially trigger a new wave of nuclear testing by adversarial nations, jeopardizing existing non-proliferation agreements.

In previous discussions, Trump expressed interest in engaging with Russia and China on nuclear arms control initiatives. However, China has expressed reluctance to participate in disarmament negotiations, citing the vast difference in arsenal sizes compared to the U.S. and Russia.

Overall, Trump’s decision to resume nuclear weapons testing marks a significant shift in U.S. nuclear policy and raises uncertainties about the future of global nuclear security.
