A scheduled meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been postponed due to Moscow’s refusal to agree to an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, hindering negotiation efforts. A senior White House official confirmed that there are no immediate plans for the two leaders to meet, following a productive phone call between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Despite Trump’s announcement of a forthcoming meeting in Hungary to address the conflict in Ukraine, Putin has shown reluctance to make concessions, insisting that Ukraine must relinquish more territory before considering a ceasefire. Trump expressed caution about holding a meeting that may not yield results but hinted at potential developments in the coming days.

While preparations for a summit are ongoing, Russia reiterated its conditions for a peace deal through a private communication to the U.S., emphasizing its demand for full control of the disputed eastern Donbas region. European leaders emphasized the importance of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, urging the maintenance of current battle lines for future negotiations.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte traveled to Washington for discussions with Trump, underscoring European perspectives on a ceasefire and peace negotiations. Despite efforts to arrange a meeting between Rubio and Lavrov in Budapest, logistical challenges arose, leading to a delay in summit preparations.

Both sides have not abandoned plans for a Trump-Putin meeting, although indications suggest a reluctance to proceed without concessions from Russia. Concerns have been raised by European allies that another meeting between Trump and Putin may not result in substantial progress.

Zelenskyy expressed disappointment over Russia’s diminished interest in diplomacy following delays in the U.S. decision on providing Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. European leaders reaffirmed support for Trump’s stance on an immediate ceasefire and using current battle lines as a basis for negotiations.

Zelenskyy’s positive outlook on the meeting with Trump, where the U.S. president endorsed a ceasefire at current positions, contrasts with reports of tense discussions. European leaders are set to convene with Zelenskyy to discuss strategies for a postwar settlement in Ukraine, with differing opinions on Budapest as a potential summit location.
