U.S. President Donald Trump has shifted his position on the Ukraine conflict towards aligning more closely with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite initial speculation that Trump might take a tougher stance against Russia and possibly align more with the European Union, his recent remarks at the U.N. General Assembly did not signal a significant policy change.

Following discussions about potentially supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles, Trump had a lengthy phone call with Putin at the Russian leader’s request. Subsequently, during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, Trump stepped back from a missile deal and emphasized his belief that Putin desires peace.

According to Phillips O’Brien, a strategic studies professor at the University of St. Andrews, Trump’s current stance is consistent with his administration’s actions, which include halting financial aid to Ukraine, refraining from imposing new direct sanctions on Russia, and pressuring Zelenskyy to concede territory.

Despite not publicly humiliating Zelenskyy during their White House meeting, reports suggest that Trump privately pressured the Ukrainian president to agree to Putin’s terms to end the conflict, including ceding territory or facing destruction by Russia.

Trump’s change in position has been attributed to a phone call with Putin, influencing his decision to refrain from providing Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. Global affairs analyst Michael Bociurkiw noted Putin’s influence over Trump, suggesting that the Russian leader convinced Trump that escalating by supplying missiles to Ukraine would be unacceptable.

In recent statements, Trump indicated a reluctance to change the status quo in Ukraine’s Donbas region and downplayed previous comments suggesting Ukraine could win the war. Rather than championing a just peace for Ukraine, Trump framed his involvement as a means to prevent further casualties.

A potential Trump-Putin summit in Hungary is on the horizon, though Zelenskyy has expressed reservations about the location and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, known for his pro-Putin stance within the EU. Zelenskyy criticized Orban’s potential role in facilitating positive outcomes for Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions.
