Worries are growing among political analysts and opponents of U.S. President Donald Trump that his administration is setting the stage to interfere in critical midterm elections that will determine the party in control of Congress.
This week, concerns escalated after Trump suggested that Republicans in Washington should have a hand in elections in 15 states, despite the U.S. Constitution assigning states the primary responsibility for conducting elections.
Following his press secretary’s efforts to downplay his remarks, Trump took it a step further on Tuesday by claiming there were “rigged, crooked elections” in key swing-state cities like Detroit, Philadelphia, and Atlanta, advocating once more for a federal government intervention in vote counting.
“When you witness how poorly some states manage their elections, it is a disgrace,” Trump stated to reporters in the Oval Office. “The federal government should step in. If they cannot conduct fair and lawful vote counts, someone else should take charge.”

Trump’s recent statements add to existing suspicions about his motives for the electoral system, following:
- Trump directing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to be present during the FBI’s seizure of ballots from the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia, a state Trump lost and where he alleged election fraud.
- Attorney General Pam Bondi pressuring states to disclose their full voter registration lists, including social security details, to the Department of Justice.
- Trump’s plan to issue an executive order banning mail-in voting and electronic voting machines.
David Laufman, a former senior official at the U.S. Department of Justice specializing in national security, described Gabbard’s involvement in the ballot seizure as “astonishing and deeply disturbing.”
He expressed concerns that these events collectively raise troubling questions about the administration’s objectives in politicizing the upcoming elections in November.
‘Authoritarianism, spoken aloud’
Adam Kinzinger, a former House Republican critical of Trump, labeled Trump’s calls for a federal election control as “authoritarianism, spoken aloud.”
“If Trump convinces his supporters that elections are inherently fraudulent unless he wins, any subsequent actions to ‘rectify’ the supposed fraud may be viewed as justified,” Kinzinger stated on Tuesday in Substack.
He cautioned that such actions could involve “pressuring election officials, intimidating voters, purging rolls, [and] refusing to certify results.”
