U.S. President Donald Trump filed a defamation lawsuit against the BBC on Monday, alleging that the network manipulated clips of his speech to falsely suggest he incited his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol. The lawsuit, filed in a Miami federal court, claims that the BBC spliced together excerpts from a speech on January 6, 2021, omitting a segment where Trump called for peaceful protest while highlighting his remarks to “fight like hell” and march on the Capitol.

Trump is seeking $5 billion US in damages for each of the two defamation counts, citing violations of a Florida law prohibiting deceptive trade practices. The BBC, in response, previously apologized to Trump, acknowledging an error in judgment for creating an impression that he directly called for violent actions but asserted there were no legal grounds for a lawsuit.

The BBC has stated its intent to defend against the lawsuit, with a spokesperson affirming the network’s position following the legal action. Trump’s legal team criticized the BBC for a purported history of misleading its audience to serve a leftist political agenda, emphasizing the lack of genuine remorse from the network despite its apology.

The controversy stemmed from a segment featured on the BBC’s documentary show “Panorama” before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, leading to the resignations of the network’s top officials amid a public relations crisis. The documentary, not broadcast in the U.S., faced scrutiny over editing practices and concerns of political bias.

Although the documentary was not aired in the United States, Trump’s lawsuit argues that its availability through platforms like BritBox and promotion by Canadian group Blue Ant Media suggest a deliberate dissemination strategy. The BBC’s potential defenses in a trial could rely on asserting the documentary’s accuracy and arguing that it did not harm Trump’s reputation, considering his political trajectory post the Capitol riot and subsequent impeachment.

Trump’s legal actions against various media outlets, including CBS and ABC, indicate a broader campaign challenging media coverage and defending his reputation following the tumultuous events surrounding the 2020 U.S. election. The attack on the U.S. Capitol was a pivotal moment in American politics, reflecting the intense divide following Biden’s victory over Trump.
