U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his suggestion for Canada to potentially become the 51st state of the United States during a speech to senior military officials in Virginia. Trump mentioned that Canada had expressed interest in the U.S.’s Golden Dome missile defense system and implied that if Canada were to join the U.S., it could benefit from this system. He shared that Canada had contacted him recently about participating in the defense system, prompting him to propose the idea of Canada joining the United States as the 51st state.

Trump mentioned that while he was unsure of the impact of his proposal, he believed that uniting the two countries could be a logical step. He highlighted Canada’s economic challenges following tariff impositions and claimed that his trade policies were attracting significant investments to the U.S.

These remarks from Trump followed statements made by Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, who downplayed the 51st state discussions, indicating that such rhetoric was no longer a focal point. Hoekstra emphasized that his focus was on achieving tangible outcomes rather than engaging in speculative conversations about Canada becoming a U.S. state.
