Russia’s incursion into Ukraine four years ago ignited the most significant conflict in Europe since World War II, leading to extensive suffering for civilians and challenging experiences for soldiers, all while reshaping the post-Cold War security landscape. As the conflict reaches its fifth year on Tuesday, there are no indications of an imminent halt.

The U.S. has facilitated discussions between delegations from Moscow and Kyiv in line with the Trump administration’s yearlong efforts for peace. However, reconciling crucial disparities, such as the fate of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories and postwar security arrangements for Ukraine, has hindered progress.

Throughout the conflict, a substantial number of troops from both sides have perished, with Ukrainian civilians enduring relentless Russian airstrikes resulting in prolonged power outages and water scarcity.

Here is a statistical overview of the conflict since the full-scale invasion in February 2022:

1.8 million: The estimated total count of soldiers killed, wounded, or missing on both sides, as per a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

14,999: The number of civilian casualties in Ukraine according to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission, with over 40,600 civilians sustaining injuries during the same period.

19.4%: The portion of Ukrainian land under Russian control, as reported by the Institute for the Study of War. Despite significant military efforts, Russia has only gained 0.79% of Ukraine’s territory in the past year.

13%: The decrease in foreign military aid to Kyiv last year compared to the average between 2022 and 2024, as noted by Germany’s Kiel Institute.

5.9 million: The count of Ukrainian civilians who have fled their country, with 5.3 million finding refuge in Europe, as reported by the UN office in Ukraine.

2,881: The number of Russian assaults impacting medical services in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion, according to the World Health Organization, with a nearly 20% increase in attacks recorded last year compared to 2024.

The protracted conflict continues to have far-reaching consequences, with ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the crisis and mitigating the toll on both military personnel and civilians.
